Denae Applegarth competed in Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking. Her topic was “Police officers should be required to carry Naloxone”.


Conner LaRosa is competing in an event called Clinical Specialty. He shadowed Dr. Boller at the Eye Doctors who taught him how to use a slit lamp. He created a portfolio over his experience including a video where he describes the skill he learned while showing the judge his video.

Our next event is Community Emergency Response Training. Draven Krueger and Jameson Davis completed 20 hours of CERT training to prepare for this event.


Our next competition of the day is Health Career Display. The students chose a health related topic to research, created a display and then, if selected, move on to the finals round where they will present. Hannah Oswald and Hailey Delisle researched Art Therapy and McKenzie Shippy and Jacelynne Griffith researched Aquatic Veterinarian.



HOSA Spring Leadership Conference. We are starting out with a few morning competitions. Health Education is the first competition. Makayla Coup and Makenna Davis are presenting on e-cigarette use in the middle school and Halle Rutschman and Tristyn Kremeier are presenting on flu prevention in the 3rd grade.
Our 2nd event is Community Awareness. Conner LaRosa, Emma Bigham, Logan Foust, and Hannah Pohlman. Their project is educating the community about HPV.

Developmental screenings for children ages birth to five will take place on Friday, March 29 in Herington. The screening is provided free of charge and will assess cognitive, motor, language, and social development as well as provide hearing, vision, and dental screenings. Please call 258-3234 to schedule an appointment.


Fifth grade students appeared at the Board of Education meeting Monday as the Revolutionary War leaders they represented in the recent wax museum. #growinglearners.

ATTENTION PARENTS: If you have a child who will turn four before Aug. 31, 2019, and you are interested in enrolling the child in the Little Railers Preschool program at the elementary school, then please call the elementary school at 258-3234 to make an appointment to have them screened. The screening is a required part of the application process for the program. There are fee- and grant-based spots available in the program for those who qualify. Herington Schools will be closed tomorrow due to weather conditions.

Due to the anticipated weather, Middle School Wrestling at Council Grove has been cancelled for this evening. A possible make up date is being considered.

The HHS Forensics team did their school very proud yesterday evening at the Hillsboro Tournament! Everyone did amazing and many were so close to breaking into finals!
Those receiving medals were:
The team of Madi Becker and Jessica Mascareno placing 4th in Duet Acting AND 2nd in IDA. Emma Brigham placing 1st in Oration Speaking! Josh Ruiz placing 5th in Humorous Solo Acting.
Because of their rankings, the oration (Emma) and IDA (Madi & Jess) are now qualified for State Champs!
Coach Hirsch was so incredibly proud of his team. “We have so much talent here. By the end of the season and with more practice, we are going to be a formidable team!”





Tuesday Games


Congratulations to McKenzie Shippy for signing to play basketball at Friends University next fall. McKenzie is the daughter is Brian and Carrie Shippy.




HES families: We are still planning on having our sweetheart dance from 6:30-7:30 this evening in the elementary gym. Students must be accompanied by an adult and there is no cost for admission. Hope to see you there!
