The middle school staff members chose 7th grader, Hanne McDermott, as the April Student of the Month. Hanne participates in quiz bowl, basketball, track, band, and 4-H. Hanne believes she was chosen as student of the month because she completes her work, works hard in class, and is kind to other students and teachers. Hanne is the daughter of Samantha Kershner and Rodney McDermott. Written by Amanda Hawkins

Emilie Roe was honored Wednesday, May 1, in Topeka with a $1000 scholarship. She placed 5th in the 5th Annual Kansas Financial Scholars Essay Scholarship Contest. The essay contest was sponsored by the Kansas Banking Commission, the Kansas Securities Commission and the Kansas Insurance Department. Ninety students from across Kansas submitted essays for this contest. Students must have been enrolled in an approved financial literacy class. The personal finance class required to be taken by students of USD 487 to graduate meets this requirement. The essay had two parts. In the first part, students had to discuss a real-life event that they, a friend or family member has experienced that made a significant impact on the student’s view of smart money management. The students then had to interview one to two persons who are already active in the field/career to which they aspire. The students then wrote a 3 to 6-page analysis of how they will apply what they learned from the interview, what you wrote about Part 1, and what you learned from your financial literacy course to their own life as they prepare for the future. Congratulations Emilie!
