This is a reminder to all High School homecoming attendants and king and queen candidates: Tomorrow (Thursday) we will be taking pictures for the paper, programs, and social media sites. Please dress nice; girls maybe in a nice casual dress with a cardigan over, boys nice pants and shirt. Meet in the HS library at the beginning of 4th hour. Any questions, see Ms. Hawkins!

Have you heard about L.I.F.E. at HES? L.I.F.E. is the LIteracy-Integrated Family Engagement program for Kansas Reading Roadmap. It is a key component in our overall strategy for improving literacy for children in kindergarten through third grade. L.I.F.E. is designed to bring families and schools together to create supportive connections that will deepen children's relationships with their parents and enhance their literacy skills. The program provides emotional and academic experiences aimed at increasing a child's reading skills and supporting a culture of literacy at home. Each week's activities are designed to bring families closer together and connect them more closely to our school community. The L.I.F.E. program at HES meets each Monday for eight weeks. The spring session begins Feb. 4. If you would like to participate in L.I.F.E., please contact Deana Baldwin by calling (785)414-8161 or emailing dbaldwin@usd487.org

A special guest visited the preschool classrooms on Jan. 16 to demonstrate how to use a sewing machine as part of their unit study on clothing. The special guest is Megan Mein, FACS teacher at the high school and parent of one of the preschoolers. The students learned about how the sewing machine works as Mrs. Mein finished off a homemade apron for each session. Thank you Mrs. Mein for a great presentation and thoughtful gift for the classroom! #growinglearners

Did you know that HHS now has a competing E-Sports League? Which is a highly competitive video game competition league. Dylan Felpel has won his first match in the game “Hearthstone.” Holden Coffman, Kayland Alexander, Joseph Pavich, and Jameson Davis have also won their first match in “Rocket League.” Others competing are Craig Rutschman, Victor Sanchez, and Brett Coupe in “Fortnite.” Mr. Hirsch is coaching this terrific new “sport.” Colleges have even contacted our members with interest!

A favorite activity in Mrs. Gutsch's third grade is MARSH-iplication. Using marshmallows, fruit loops, and toothpicks, students practice making models of equal groups. They then determine the repeated addition equation as well as the multiplication statement. This is a fun way to begin learning multiplication facts. The best part is eating the models when finished! #growinglearners
