6th Grade Cultivating our Future Expedition In the Cultivating Our Future Expedition, students investigate agricultural technologies and the factors that affect food production in America. They also learn how most people can contribute to feeding the world through urban farming practices. Students plant their own radish garden in a clear plastic glove and make observations of the garden at different stages of growth. Students also use the engineering design process to design, construct, and test a greenhouse that meets certain construction requirements.

7th Grade Artificial Ecosystems Expedition We are preparing biospheres to observe the cycle of how matter transfers through ecosystems. In this expedition students have also conducted experiments to test the effects of acidic and basic solutions on plant growth, and how different colors of light effect the rate at which photosynthesis occurs. Jeff Yalden will a guest speaker in our area on November 13, 2018 and will share his message and expertise concerning positive mental health and suicide prevention. He has toured in all 50 states and 49 countries to spread his inspirational message. He will be presenting to students at the Herington High School at 1:00pm and will also facilitate a parent and community member session at 6:30pm in Herington’s elementary gym. October Events

High School Volleyball Matches at Centre High School on October 4th. This is a Dual between Herington and Centre. Matches will begin at 6:00 pm. Order of play is JV, followed by back to back Varsity matches following KSHSAA Rules.

Tuesday, October 2nd games at Herington. Senior Night Recognition will be between the two varsity matches. Come support the Lady Railers on their home court.

Second graders build paper towers to learn about how properties of matter can be changed. Students first built a 12-inch tower using only note cards and paper clips. Then, they had to build a tower that was strong enough to support a textbook. Students learned that weak and flimsy paper could hold up a book if used correctly. They also learned how to problem solve and make adjustments to their hypothesis. #growinglearners
