Students in Speech class completed a short unit on writing and following directions. For the final task, they had to write a list of directions for someone not in the class to follow. Results varied but all parties had fun.

A big thank you to Barnes Heartland Foods for their generous donation of lunches to the Herington Middle School basketball teams for their games in Elyria this past Monday. Your support means so much to our players and coaches, and it’s a great example of how our community comes together. We appreciate you!

The Herington Railer Archery Team traveled to Pittsburg, KS on Jan 18th to compete against 19 other schools from Kansas, Missouri, & Oklahoma. Possibly the toughest competition we will see all season. The Railers performed well against some very experienced and well coached competition. We had five archers set new PR’s in Bullseye & nine archers set new PR’s in 3D competition. Most notably in the Bullseye competition were 2nd year shooters Audrey Kamena who raised her PR 56 points with a score of 237 & Xane Kluth raised his PR 42 points with a score of 186. In the 3D competition we had four archers with notably large PR increases. Austin Henson scored 271, increasing his PR by 38 points. Xane Kluth scored 188, increasing his PR by 45 points. Audrey Kamena scored 231, increasing her PR by 48 points. Mariah Kossmann scored 225, increasing her PR by 69 points. The Railers had several archers finish in the top 10 but only one archer finish on the podium Saturday. First year HES archer Kennadie Minton (4th grade) finished in 3rd place in the 3D competition in the Elementary Girls Division with a score of 189. Those finishing in the top 10 in their respective divisions were: Austin Henson (4th 3D & 6th bullseye), Kimberly Schantz (8th bullseye & 9th 3D), Xane Kluth (4th 3D), Emma Pruitt (6th 3D), Derek Whitson (7th 3D), Treygan Meier (7th 3D), Christopher Miller (8th 3D), Cecily Beck (8th 3D), Lillian Rucker (9th 3D), and Brynlee Alexander (9th 3D). Overall we shot well for the first tournament of the season. We had some great score increases in some second and third year archers showing the importance of what experience and practice can produce. Our first year archers got to see a big tournament and get those “first game jitters” out of the way, preparing them for a great first season. Our more experienced archers got to see some good competition and now have a target score to strive for and a renewed focus for the importance of practice and getting better. The Railer Archery team travels to Clearwater KS next on Feb 1st to shoot Bullseye & 3D
