In today’s Senior Spotlight we would like to feature Gabbriella Carnes. She is the daughter of Leah Carnes. While in high school she has been involved in Volleyball, Track, Softball, Homecoming Queen, Choir, Drama, Forensics, FCCLA Basketball Manager, Avid, and Yearbook. Her future plans are to attend Butler County Community College and major in something that will help people in situations like hers: Social Work. There were two favorite high school memories that she would like to share. “The first was when Coach Beye, Coach Parks and Coach Kickhaefer let me play volleyball on senior night. It made my mom so proud of me. The second was when everyone clapped for me when I was crowned homecoming queen.” When asked what her favorite class was she had several: Yearbook with Mrs. Beye and Ms. Levens; Math with Mrs. Vinduska and Government with Mr. Hirsh. When asked the hardest part of not getting to complete your senior year physically in school she replied, “The one on one communication or the understanding that there's other issues going on in people's lives that affect them from doing some work. I feel as if I'm not learning up to my potential.” Her message to underclassmen is “Time is precious. Things and people can vanish in a blink of an eye. Enjoy the little things. Stay persistent. Yes the future is important but there's no need to be a day ahead or stuck in the past. Go to a school function, join clubs, and just be a part of something. You never know when it could be your last moment together as a class. Last but not least be one with each other. There's no need to step on someone else when you could instead help them up and guide each other through their struggles. Your class will be as one so work together as a family. Your senior year is your last moments together before everyone finds their own paths. Just know that you're not alone and the teachers have your best interest. All you have to do is ask for help.” Best of Luck Gabby! #railerproud

For the next several weeks we will be taking time to recognize the seniors in a senior spotlight. We will be presenting seniors in alphabetical order. Today we would like to recognize Kayland Alexander. Kayland is the son of Pamala and Bryan Alexander. He has been involved in Basketball, Football, Student Council and FFA during his high school career. Kayland plans to attend college and obtain a degree in Elementary Education. His best memory of high school was the homecoming football game his sophomore year. Kayland picked off the ball on the last play of the game and ran it back for six points against Onaga High School to seal the win! His favorite classes are culinary and art because he loves to eat and has a passion for art. The hardest part of missing out on school this final month is the fact that “we all knew we would miss this place and all the memories we made at Herington High School but we didn’t know it would be this soon.” There were still many more memories to be made. His advice to underclassmen is to cherish every moment you have. Every practice that you might think is miserable at the time, every game day, every club meeting, every pep assembly, this list can go on and on. Either way, those moments will come and go fast whether you enjoy them or not, so don’t wait around until tomorrow to give it your all, because tomorrow might not come. Best of luck Kayland! #railerproud

Hey Kansas! I'm Sarah Biehler, a senior at Herington High School, and I am absolutely thrilled to be serving as your 2020-2021 VP of Corporate Relations and Finance. Although I'm from a small town, I find ways to stay active and involved in my school and community. In addition to FCCLA, I also participate in FBLA, NHS, Drama Club, Stu-co, Class Leadership, and Cheerleading. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with friends, volunteering, baking, and playing with my dogs, Molly, Ava, and Blue. I can't wait to meet you all and see what you will accomplish in the coming year!

Congratulations to Gene Hanson who was selected to participate in a 2020 Senior Leaders Conversation. 64 seniors from Kansas were selected for this opportunity. The purpose of these casual conversations is to allow our Senior Leaders to share their unique stories with KSDE staff and their fellow seniors. He will be discussing guiding questions to get students thinking, but mostly for seniors to share what they found important in their journey to graduation and postsecondary life. In addition to KSDE staff, who will be facilitating the small breakout Zoom groups, staff from the Kansas Board of Regents will be in attendance as a resource for any postsecondary education questions.
