Middle School students and staff threw it back to the 70’s yesterday for Spirit Week!
Registration is now open for the 2022 HOBY State Leadership Seminar! This multi-day program is proven to provide your students with an experience that cultivates personal growth and leadership development while building new connections and friendships throughout the state. Students return from HOBY with a deeper sense of self-awareness, elevated confidence, and the inspiration and tools to give back to their communities through leadership and service.

The Herington High School Cross Country Varsity and JV squads competed at Marion on Thursday, September 23. This meet proved to be an unforgettable one and one that will set the bar for future competitions. The Herington High School Cross Country team got a glimpse of how capable they are of performing as individuals for a team. Four out of five of the members on the team received a medal. When asked about how he felt about his team accomplishing such a great thing, Koy Mueller said, “It feels so great that all of my hard work paid off. I was happy, but I’m still more concerned with my times rather than my placing.”
Davanne Schaffer, competed as a Varsity runner for the girls in the 5k race. She ran a time of 24.46 and placed eleventh among the Varsity female runners. She is continuing to find her stride this year as she is becoming more familiar with the courses. Jaiden Vogt competed as a junior varsity runner in the 5k. She placed sixth and she is beginning to understand the strategy behind her running. She set a brand new personal record for herself and she has set the bar high at 29.56. She cut off four minutes from her time at the previous meet at Lyndon. On the boys side, Koy Mueller competed as a varsity runner in the 5k. His average mile pace is staying consistent, but at this meet he struggled to break the 20 minute barrier that he can usually surpass. At this meet, he ran a time of 20.33. Korey Meier as a junior varsity runner in the 5k. Korey placed sixteenth and earned his first medal of the year, he ran a time of 24.07. Korey cut thirty seconds off his previous personal record that he set at Lyndon and he is finding his extra kick at the end of tough races.

October Breakfast and Lunch Menu
Archery Practice begins Next Week. Please get your Commitment Form, Behavior Contract & Participation Fee turned into Mr. Fewin, ASAP if possible. Practice Days are Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. Morning Practices are from 6:45 a.m. until 7:45 a.m. and after school Practice will be at 3:35 p.m. until 4:35 p.m. Archers need to meet Mr. Fewin at the Back Doors where HS & MS Students load & unload from the Buses. Archers must attend at least 2 Practices a week to remain on the Team. All Archers are Responsible for their own Transportation and must be on Time!! We are inviting you to another “Lunch on the Lawn” event for Friday, October 1st, 2021! You may bring your lunch, or purchase a school sack lunch to eat with your child in front of the elementary school. If you would like to eat a school sack lunch, a visitor lunch ticket must be purchased in advance. The last day to purchase tickets will be Wednesday, September 29th and the cost is $4.00 per ticket. The tickets are nonrefundable. In case of potential inclement weather, we will make a decision/announcement at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning, October 1st to cancel or postpone. On September 21, the Lady Railers took on the Peabody Warriors and the Centre Cougars. Although the matches last night were hosted by Rural Vista, the Railers did not compete against them on the court. They are scheduled to play the Heat during the Herington Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 25. When asked about her feelings on the night as a whole, Senior Emma Alt said, “I feel that we played well overall, there were definitely moments where the gym felt dead, but I feel that as a team we were able to bring our own energy. I’m really looking forward to the competition that we will face this Saturday and I look forward to seeing all the support we will get from our community on our home court.”
Centre
The JV and Varsity competed against the Centre Cougars who are under a new head coach, Shelby Makovec Srajer. The JV squad came out with a fire lit under them after falling apart in their previous game against the Peabody Warriors. They were able to connect with each other and go on several runs. Unfortunately in the first set, the Cougars were able to match the Lady Railer’s intensity and go point for point. The Lady Railers lost the first set 24-26. Proud of the performance that they were able to put up, they were determined to repeat their level of play. They were able to do just that and create a different outcome. The Railers won the second set 25-20 against the Centre Cougars.
This was the first time that the Varsity set foot on the court with the rotation that they had been practicing. They had to alter substitutions and rotations due to even more key players having to go through COVID-19 protocol. The goal is that after this week of competition they won’t have to deal with protocols. The Lady Railers competed against the Centre Cougars for the first time this season. Both teams have solid senior presences and the Railers knew that they could win but it would require hard work. In the first set, they were able to figure out how to work together with what was once again a new lineup. After creating impressive defensive plays, they were struggling to develop explosive plays at the net consistently. The Lady Railers won the first set, 25-17. In the second set they were able to utilize their hitters better and make the explosive plays that they were missing in their first set. It was visible that the players were better understanding their roles on the court. It was a different story from behind the serving line, as the Railers had only one player with a serving percentage higher than 85%. It was the small mistakes from the Railers and the scrappiness of the Lady Cougars that kept the second set close. The Lady Railers ultimately won their second set, 25-18.
Statistics
Senior Emma Alt was a threat at the net in the Railers match against Centre. She led the team in both kills and blocks, having four a piece. Senior Halle Rutschman used her agility to her advantage and earned twelve digs for her team to keep crucial plays alive. Senior Tristyn Kremeier led the team with five assists and is a critical part of creating explosive plays at the net. Freshmen Leslyn Kremeier, Harley Larosa, and Adrian Harison contributed largely to both sides of the ball. Especially on serve receive, the trio was able to get the job done in the back row and help set their teammates up for success. Leslyn had 11 successfully received balls, Harley had 4, and Adrian had 1.
Peabody
The order that the squads played in on Tuesday differed, the JV squad competed against the Peabody Warriors first. Whereas, the Varsity finished their night off with a match against the Warriors. The JV came with fresh legs and an eagerness to get out on the court with a new lineup. The first set went fairly smoothly and the Lady Railers were able to adjust to their position and identify their role. The Railers won the first set 25-11. During the second set, there were many bumps in the road and the flaws in the team’s chemistry were quickly revealed. The JV squad made their best effort to recover after losing nine points in a row. Unfortunately, they had dug themselves into a whole too deep. In crucial moments where serves were needed, the Railers were not able to deliver. The Lady Railers lost 12-25 and missed eleven serves in just the second set.
This was not the first time that the Varsity squad had battled with the Warriors this season. In the previous Solomon Invitational Tournament on September 11, the Railers were able to compete against Peabody in pool play. The Lady Railers were able to use this match to perfect rotations and run specialized offensive plays in a game-type setting. This game was especially crucial to the underclassmen, they were able to develop more confidence in their abilities as all-around players. The Lady Railers won the first set, 25-15. They went into the second set knowing their capabilities to dominate in this match. They set a goal to limit the other team to single-digits. They were able to accomplish this goal and they won their second set, 25-8.
Statistics
Freshman Adrian Harrison did the little things right in the Varsity match against the Warriors, she served a total of 10 times and had 100% accuracy in this match. Seniors Halle Rutschman and Emma Alt led the team in blocking as they each earned three for their team. Freshman and Libero for the night, Leslyn Kremeier, had nine digs against the Warriors and 26 digs on the night as a whole. Senior Tristyn Kremeier led the team in kills with two against the Peabody Warriors.

Miss Mein’s Advisory used their Wednesday afternoon working on a PBL project down at the Father P park. They painted the wood train. Thank you to the City of Herington for the purchase of the paint for the project.
Ms. Hawkins’ advisory class began painting their Hope Box for their PBL project! This box is being made both the MS advisory class and the City of Herington. Keep checking the FB page for finished project pictures!
The Herington High School Cross Country Varsity and JV squads got to compete on their home course for the first and only time this season. Several different community members, athletes from other sports, and extended family members were able to make an appearance at the Herington Golf Course. Having quite the crowd at their meet, this small team was energized and ready to deliver. The team put up quite the show after having four out of five of their members obtain new personal records for the season at this meet. This Thursday, the Varsity and JV squads will travel to Marion.
Current Herington High School record holder in the 5k, Davanne Schaffer, competed as a varsity runner and ran a time of 23.18. She placed 15th in a highly competitive group of high school girls, with first place crossing the finish line in 21 minutes. When asked about competing on their home course, Davanne Schaffer said, “My biggest goal for this meet was to try my hardest and run my best on our home turf, especially knowing that there were so many people there to support me.” She cut off over two minutes from her last run at Lyndon and set a new personal record for this season. Jaiden Vogt competed as a junior varsity runner in the 5k. She placed elevent, running a time of 33.29. She is really pushing herself to stay on a good pace and she is getting more and more comfortable as a competitor during meets. On the boys side, Koy Mueller competed as a varsity runner in the 5k. He placed 16th in his division and ran a time of 19.10. Koy set a new personal record for himself this season and his average mile pace was 6.37. Korey Meier and Sumner Schlesener competed as junior varsity runners in the 5k. Korey placed 12th against a large group of junior varsity boys and ran a time of 24.35. He cut exactly one minute off of his time at Lyndon and he is consistently getting faster each meet. Sumner Schlesener placed 17th, beating his previous personal record by over two seconds. The advantage of knowing the course before he arrived payed off for him as he ran a new PR of 26.25
