We’re thrilled to share that the Books Are Fun “Book Blast” event has officially wrapped up — and what an amazing event it was! This all-inclusive program ensures that every student receives at least one brand-new book, and our school community truly showed up to make it happen.
From February 2 – February 17, 2026, students had the opportunity to invite contributions with the goal of earning a full set of 10 books at their reading level — a value of approximately $135! Even better, contributions beyond that amount helped provide books for other students and supported classroom resources and supplies. When students share the exciting stories they’re reading, it inspires others to get involved and read more, too!
Here’s what our school accomplished:
💰 $11,280.00 in total contributions 📦 776 brand-new books are on their way to Herington Elementary School students! They will be here in early March! The additional sign-up prizes will be here then as well. The winner of the ultimate treasure box will be announced at this time too, so stay tuned!
Thanks to this incredible success, we’re excited to announce that another Book Blast is coming — in Spring 2027! Stay tuned for more details as we plan for another unforgettable event.
Thank you for being part of something so meaningful — and for helping us spread the joy of reading! 💛

8th grade students traveled to Kansas State University on Tuesday. During the morning sessions, students visited the Sutherland Foundation Innovation Lab where they had the opportunity to design and print their own custom personalized tag, create a video using a Mad-Lib script and props, as well as visit the Immersion Lab where learning came to life all around them! While on campus, students were also able to tour a couple of the athletic facilities--Morgan Family Arena and West Stadium Center.

A big shout-out to our amazing community partners! Herington Elementary is incredibly grateful for an extremely generous donation from Peggy Hilliard and the Herington Family Resource Exchange (FRE). Peggy and the FRE donated three sets of gift cards specifically to support the needs of our HES students and staff. We are so lucky to have the FRE supporting our families and our school. Thank you, Peggy and FRE, for everything you do for Herington!

The juniors (Class of 2027) will be taking the ACT at Herington High School on Tuesday February 24th. Testing will begin in the HS gym at 8am. ACT does not allow late admittance if test booklets have been handed out. It is important that students are on time. They will need to have a calculator, no food or drinks are allowed in the testing room. If a parent has opted their student out, testing will be finished by noon and the student can arrive at that time. If a parent plans to opt out their student, Mr. Pritchard should be contacted at 785-258-2261 as soon as possible.

Students from the HMS and HHS Youth Leadership in Kansas (YLinK) organization attended the Youth Mental Health Advocacy Day at the State Capitol in Topeka. The day included a guest speaker, breakout sessions, visits with State representatives, and a tour of the Capitol building. The purpose of the Youth Mental Health Advocacy Day is to bring YLinK chapters together from across the state and to relay information to our state representatives about the importance and the need for Youth Mental Health support.
