FAMILY, COMMUNITY AND CONSUMER SERVICES

Consumer Services pathway focuses on the careers relating to help others to successfully manage their resources including personal and family financial goal setting across the life span, risk management, individual decision making, strategies to goal achievement, income, asset and debt management, risk management, preventing financial difficulties and working with public resources. This is not customer service or the finance/banking professions (which are addressed in the Business and Management career field), but helping people manage their financial decisions as through credit counseling, real estate, and family financial planning to name a few.

This pathway will prepare students to enter the workforce ready to participate as leaders in a broad range of careers and further their education.

The classes for this pathway are below. They are designed to build on each other and should be taken in the order specified.

Career & Life Planning 22207

Grade 8 Elective Semester

Self-Management courses introduce students to the skills and strategies helpful in becoming more focused, productive individuals. These courses typically emphasize goal-setting; decision-making; managing time, energy, and stress; and identifying alternatives and coping strategies. They may also allow students to explore various career and lifestyle choices.

Consumer & Personal Finance 22220

Grade Level: 10-12 Elective Semester

Consumer Economics/Personal Finance courses provide students with an understanding of the concepts and principles involved in managing one’s personal finances. Topics may include savings and investing, credit, insurance, taxes and social security, spending patterns and budget planning, contracts, and consumer protection. These courses may also provide an overview of the American economy.

Entrepreneurship 12053

Grade 9-12 Semester

Entrepreneurship courses acquaint students with the knowledge and skills necessary to own and operate their own businesses. Topics from several fields typically form the course content: economics, marketing principles, human relations and psychology, business and labor law, legal rights and responsibilities of ownership, business and financial planning, finance and accounting, and communication.

Marketing 12152

Grade 10-12 Elective Semester

Marketing Comprehensive courses focus on the wide range of factors that influence the flow of goods and services from the producer to the consumer. Topics may include (but are not limited to) market research, the purchasing process, distribution systems, warehouse and inventory control, salesmanship, sales promotions, shoplifting and theft control, business management, and entrepreneurship. Human relations, computers, and economics are often covered as well.

Career & Community Connections 22250

Grade 11-12 Elective Year

Community Living courses place a special emphasis on the student€™s relationship to the surrounding community. Instruction varies with the students and their needs; however, these courses provide the skills necessary for independent functioning within the surrounding environment. Course topics may also include available community resources and how to access them, emergency skills, and independent living strategies.

College Agreement: Pittsburg State University

A student completing this pathway and attending Pittsburg State University will be awarded 1 college credit of FCS 100: Career Maagement in Family & Concumer Science.
