The Herington School District maintains two libraries. One is housed in the elementary school and primarily serves elementary students and teachers. There are over 11,500 books in this library. The second library is in the high school. It is used primarily by middle school and high school students and teachers. It has separate sections for the middle school and high school in order to maintain age-appropriate books for each level. There are about 10,000 books in this library.
Number of books and length of checkout are based on grade level. The following guidelines are used:
Kindergarten and Grade One - One Book for One Week
Grade Two - Up to Two Books for One Week
Grades Three, Four and Five - Up to Three Books for One Week
Middle School - Up to Two Books for Two Weeks
High School - Up to Four Books for Two Weeks
Students at all levels may renew their books if the books are not on the limited use list.
Overdue Book Fines
Books that are kept longer than the check-out period without renewing them will be overdue. Students in elementary school and middle school will not be assessed fines. Students in high school will be assessed a fine of 5 cents per book per day.
Lost and Damaged Books
Students at all levels will be required to pay the replacement cost of any book that is lost or damaged. A book is considered lost if it has not been returned after three renewals. If a book has been labeled "lost", but is later returned, no charge will be assessed.
