Kindergarten                                                                                                                    

1.       Keep a steady beat

2.       Be able to distinguish fast and slow tempos

3.       Be able to distinguish high and low pitches

4.       Be able to distinguish the difference between loud and soft

1st Grade

1.       Will learn the pitches associated with the solfege syllables SO-MI-LA

2.       Be able to distinguish melodies that are the same and different

3.       Will be able to describe what tempo means: how fast or slow the music is

4.       Be able to distinguish between long and short notes

5.       Create rhythms based on the known note values

6.       Have a basic understanding of musical forms: AB, ABA (same/different, same/different/same)

7.       Know the look and value of a quarter note

8.       Know the look and value of a quarter rest

9.       Know the look and value of a whole note

 

2nd Grade

1.       Be able to describe if the melody line steps, skips, or leaps and sing them as well

2.       Be able to sing in a call and response manner

3.       Will learn the pitches associated with the solfege syllables SO-MI-DO

4.       Be able to tell which is a strong beat

5.       Understand an ostinato: a constant rhythm in the background

6.       Be able to understand dynamics in terms of forte (f- loud) and piano (s- soft)

7.       Know the look and value of a half note

8.       Know the look and value of a dotted half note

9.       Know the look and value of an eighth rest

3rd Grade

1.       Be able to determine the downbeat from the upbeat

2.       Will learn the pitches associated with the solfege syllables low SO, low LA, high DO

3.       Understand tempo changes

4.       Have a basic understanding of the musical styles of legato and staccato (long and connected – short and has space between notes)

5.       Have a basic understanding of the musical forms: AABAA (same/same/different/same/same)

6.       Know the look and value of a dotted quarter rest

7.       Know the look and value of a triplet set (3 notes evenly in 1 beat

8.       Know the look and value of four 16th notes (4 notes evenly in 1 bea

 

4th Grade

1.       Will learn the pitches associated with the solfege syllable TI

2.       Have a basic understanding of a triad chord

3.       Be able to sing descants

4.       Have a basic understanding of the I-V harmony (I and V are Roman numerals representing a chord in a key)

5.       Know the look and value of a dotted quarter note

6.       Know the look and value of two 16th and an 8th followed by an 8th and two 16th

7.       Know the look and value of dotted quarter-eighth

8.       Know the look and value of eighth-quarter-eighth

9.       Understand time signatures

10.   Understand the look and function of a sharp, flat, and natural sign (it changes the sound of the pitches)

5th Grade

1.       Know musical scales including Major, Minor, and Pentatonic

2.       Know the difference between legato style and non-legato styles

3.       Have a basic understanding of how to perform syncopation

4.       Have a basic understanding of the musical form: AABA

5.       Have  a basic understanding of the 12-bar blues

6.       Know different tempo changes: accelerando (get faster) and ritardando (gradually get slower)

7.       Know different tempo markings: Andante and Allegro

8.       Have a basic understanding of music in Variations (one song taken through different rhythms)
