8th Grade Mentos Lab
HMS 8th Graders Test The Mentos / Diet Coke Eruption Theory
by Jayson Emig
A question was asked of Mr. Emig's 8th Grade Science class: " Does the type of soda effect the eruption height of a Mentos candy drop in a 2L bottle of soda?"
Students conducted experiments to find the answer. Mr. Emig has two sections of 8th grade students. Both sections were broken into teams of 2 or 3 students. They had to follow a series of steps to conduct their experiment.

The steps include:
1. State the Question
2. Make a Hypothesis
3. List Materials Needed to Conduct Experiment
4. Design the Procedure
5. Record their Observations
6. Record their Conclusions

Students did find some interesting results:
A. Diet Coke is better than Coke
B. Caramel Soda is better than Citrus Soda
C. Mint Mentos is better than Fruit Mentos
D. The more Mentos used, the bigger the eruption!

Students had a good time measuring the height of their soda eruptions. They enjoyed even more eating the leftovers!
