The new Herington Elementary School opened its doors on August 17th for students at 1403 D Street.   The school was built to accommodate students’ needs now and in the future.

The building was designed to be ecologically friendly to the environment with water and energy saving features, recycled building materials, and human friendly cleaning and finishing materials.

The building was designed to be multi-functional for ages 0 to adult.   Spaces such as the cafeteria, gym, community room and activity areas were made for multi configurations and set ups.   Furniture was selected for mobility and functionality.   All areas were equipped with technology such as cabled Internet, wireless, inter-distance learning capabilities and audio visual technology.   Public address systems were installed in each of the areas.

The building houses services for children from age 0-5th grade.   The west hallway called the East Yard services students from 0-2nd grade and the east hallway called the West Yard services students from 3-5th grade.  Services such as media, counseling, Parents As Teacher and Special Education are located conveniently to each yard.  Each room is equipped with an interactive board, wired and wireless Internet, digital quad public address system and has access to a bank of computers.   In each yard there is an activity room that classes use for activities that need ample room to spread out.   Inter-distance learning, Internet, quad sound public address system, audio visual equipment and a kitchen area are located in the activity areas.  An enclosed play area is provided for the 0-kindergarten level and a separate protected play area for grades 1-5.
The school has several programs to assist students to meet their potential.   A fully functioning student improvement team meets weekly to assist students, parents and staff.   The Multi-Tiered Support System is currently in place and developing.   The school site council meets once a month with membership from the community, parents, and staff.   A Parent Teacher Association meets monthly to support the schools mission and role in the community.   The school has access to a Therapy Dog Program that assists the counseling department.

The school has connections with the local community such as the Food Bank, Family Resource, Adopt A Military Unit Program and the Chamber of Commerce.

The school has numerous volunteers from seniors, parents, community members and teens.

The school is accredited by the Advance Ed Association and has received numerous Standard of Excellence Awards and Challenge Awards from the State of Kansas in reading, math and science.   The elementary school received the Blue Ribbon Award from the Department of Education in 2007.
