"Be the Change"

Before the fall semester of 2015, Superintendent John Thissen approached Herington’s local FBLA advisor, Lisa Beye, about starting a Facebook page for USD 487.  To this point he was very apprehensive because our small town was known for having a negative social media presence.  After their meeting, Lisa Beye approached four senior girls in Herington FBLA to begin a social media campaign that would change the attitude and the moral of our small community and schools. The four girls met, brainstormed, and came up with the idea of a social media campaign called “Be the Change.” The “Be the Change” campaign would involve not only our FBLA chapter but also our sociology and psychology classes at Herington High, a small rural school. Our school prides itself on family, unity and hard work.

In order to make this campaign a success the FBLA chapter needed an expert to help them along the process.  At that point, Tri-County Chamber of Commerce Director Wendy Jones was approached about starting a partnership to encourage positive attitude in using social media in our small community.  The Herington FBLA Chapter chose Wendy Jones to partner with because of the role the Local Tri-County Chamber of Commerce plays in our area.  The agency is there to help promote local business and industry.  The chapter feels that our school is one of the most vital businesses in our community.  The Chamber also works closely with a number of other youth organizations in the county about the value and role of business in our society today.  Wendy also has expertise and a background in Marketing and Social Media and will bring great ideas and knowledge to the project.  Other community members such as Susan Mueller, Roger Boeling, and a few others were asked to help also with maintaining and monitoring the page.

We encourage all citizens of Herington and those associated with Herington Schools to "Be the Change"!  Highlight the positive things that go on in our community instead of focusing on the bad.
