Kim Coover receives Teacher of the Year Award
January 26, 2012
Kim Coover was nominated for this award because she has a passion for students and learning. She has transformed her classroom into a technological plethora of learning experiences. Kim Coover received her Master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology from Emporia State University in 2006. Since that time, she has worked on making herself a leader in technology and her classroom a paperless place.
Mrs. Coover arrives at school before 7 A.M. everyday. She has taught science at Herington High School for 14 years. In that 14 years, she has made connections with students that are remarkable. For instance, there is a young man serving our country in the Air Force right now, who without Mrs. Coover, would not have graduated from high school. She took the time to be his substitute mother and check on him daily, sometimes hourly, to keep him on track. She kept reminding him of his goals and not to lose sight of those goals.
To quote a current student, “I think Mrs. Coover deserves the "Teacher of the Year" award because she relates well with the students. She has great advice and is a wonderful role model.” A paraprofessional who works with Mrs. Coover also said, “Mrs. Coover has the patience of a saint.”
Mrs. Coover is active in her community by serving as a volunteer fire fighter. She also sponsors the freshmen class, the Treehuggers Club, National Honors Society, and is working with the Fit Trail committee to develop a walking trail from Father Padilla Park to the school. She is also actively involved in development of an outdoor classroom for USD 487’s students.
