Lesson Plans Week 5
2010-2011
Mrs. Patterson’s 5th grade class         
Date:  Monday, Sept. 13, 2010-2011        SUB PLANS  

8:10   Bell rings.  Students enter the building.  Hand in homework/copy assignments into planners/turn in lunch money/hand in returned notes/sharpen pencils/organize materials, etc.  (There may be a review math sheet in the daily folder that students can start on once they have filled out their planners and handed in work).

8:30 Take attendance and lunch count.

MATH  8:30-9:30

Objective:  Write the standard, word, and expanded forms of whole numbersw.
Materials: math textbook, paper, pencil
Instructional procedures:
• Read/discuss text page 4.  Have students take out notebook paper and write 4 things in the upper right hand corner:  name, subject, page, date
• Assign page 5 (#1-31).  Do the first several problems together.  Tell students to leave plenty of space between problems so that the answers will be easy to read.  You may want to have students number their paper (leaving plenty of room) so that you can help them with the first several problems in each new set of directions.
• If students finish the math assignment before 9:30, students should study/review their study sheets for math measurement length facts and math vocabulary (addend, sum …).  The study sheets are located in their 3-ring binders behind the math tab.

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective:  Learn prefix/suffix meanings.  
Materials: Frindle reading book, study sheet, pencil  
Instructional procedures:
• Read/discuss ch. 14 in Frindle together as a class
• Hand out prefix/suffix study sheet.  Read/discuss.  Have students study it individually.
• Read AR books.
Assessment: teacher observation

LANGUAGE/SPELLING/WRITING:  10:30-11:30  
Title I math:  11:00-11:30   ( except on Tuesday (library)
11:30- restroom break before recess

Objective: Students will take a spelling pretest and will edit daily language sentences.
Materials: spelling pretest packet , daily language sentences packet, spelling words list packet, paper, pencil
Instructional procedures:
• Give unit 3 spelling pretest to students.  Students have the pretest packet in their 3-ring binders behind the spelling tab.  Look in the daily folder for the teacher’s key to the pretest for you to read to the students.  (If a student says he/she can’t find the pretest packet, then have him/her write the words on notebook paper).
• Have students write unit 3 words twice each (printing each word once and writing each word in cursive once).  Students have the spelling list in the spelling packet that is also located in their 3-ring binders behind the spelling tab.
• Read/discuss/edit daily language sentences for week 4- Monday’s sentences only.  Call on a student to read Monday’s first sentence.  Then ask for a volunteer to identify the first error and tell how to correct it.  Do the same thing for the second sentence.  Then students will write the 2 DL (Daily Language) sentences.  (If someone doesn’t have the packet, then have him/her write the sentences on notebook paper).
 
Assessment: spelling pretest, teacher observation  

NOON RECESS:  11:30-11:45  Get students from recess/Hand out lunch cards/sanitize hands at 11:45

LUNCH:          11:50-12:15  Pick up students in lunchroom at 12:15.

12:20-12:50        BAND
Non-band students will complete all unfinished work and then read AR books.  Study the study sheets if AR goal is met or a test is approaching.

12:50-1:30       Later in the year this period will be Mandarin Chinese class.  Today this will be a study period to complete all work and then read AR.

1:30-2:00 This will be Title Reading time once that class has started.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  
SCIENCE this week:
objective: Explore how a plants parts help it survive.   
materials: textbook
instruction:  
• Read/discuss text pgs. A28-A35.
• Students should finish any unfinished work when finished with science.
• Read AR books when finished with everything.
assessment: teacher observation

2:20 Restroom break/change into PE shoes, update planners, organize work folders for the end of the day

2:25-3:15 MUSIC/PE
(Walk the class to music.  Pick the students up from PE at 3:15).

3:15 Check work folders and planners to see that all necessary materials are taken home to be studied or completed.   Pack bookbags with necessary materials/planners/work folders/study sheets, lunch notes, etc.

Dismiss students according to daily procedures.

Objective: Learn the Big-Little Strategy for word problems
Materials: sequential counting packet, pencil, worksheets, study sheet
Instructional procedures:
• Teach the 8’s sequential counting to the class.  Have students take out their sequential counting packets.  Review the 2’s-7’s.
• Teach the Big-Little Strategy.  Hand out a study sheet on it.
• Do a word problem sheet together.
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective: Improve reading comprehension skills by answering questions in complete sentences.
Materials: Frindle book, pencil, worksheet, character packet
Instructional procedures:   
• Read/discuss ch. 15 in Frindle.
• Ch. 13-15 questions
• Add to character packet.
• Read AR.
Assessment: worksheet


LANGUAGE/SPELLING/WRITING:  10:30-11:30  
Title I math:  11:00-11:30   ( except on Tuesday (library)

Objective: Edit sentences (conventions).  Learn spelling words.  Brainstorm the pretest writing prompt required for the first 9 weeks.  
Materials:  DL (daily language sentences), spelling packet, writing prompt sheet, pencil
Instructional procedures:  
• Read/discuss/edit/write daily language sentences for week 4, Tuesday.
• Work on the 6-Trait topic of ideas.  Practice writing descriptive sentences with details.
• Finish math/Read AR when finished with all work.
Assessment: teacher observation, DL edited sentences

NOON RECESS:  11:30-11:45  Get students from recess/Hand out lunch cards/sanitize hands at 11:45

LUNCH:          11:50-12:15  Pick up students in lunchroom at 12:15.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  
SCIENCE this week:
objective: Describe the process of photosynthesis.
materials: textbook. Pencil, pape, colored pencils
instruction:  
• Read/discuss text pgs. A36-A39.  Do sh. Pgs. 17-18.  Draw diagram on p A39.  Label and color.
• Complete all unfinished work when done with science.
assessment: teacher observation

Materials:  Big-Little Strategy study sheet, worksheet, pencil, sequential counting packet
Instructional procedures:
• Learn the 8’s sequential counting.
• Review giant inch to fourths of an inch.
• Review Big-Little Strategy/Do a word problem worksheet
• Learn units for customary weight.
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective:  Increase reading comprehension skills.  
Materials: Frindle book, pencil, reading quiz
Instructional procedures:
• Take an end-of book Frindle quiz.
• Update character packet.
• Study prefixes/suffixes.
• Read AR books.
Assessment:  worksheet, character packet

12:50-1:30       Later in the year this period will be Mandarin Chinese class.  Today have students use computers for Math Facts in a Flash.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  **EARLY RELEASE 1:30
