Mrs. Patterson’s 5th grade class         
Date:  Monday, August 30   

8:10   Bell rings.  Students enter the building.  Hand in homework/copy assignments into planners/turn in lunch money/hand in returned notes/sharpen pencils/organize materials, etc.  (There may be a review math sheet in the daily folder that students can start on once they have filled out their planners and handed in work).

8:30 Take attendance and lunch count.

MATH  8:30-9:30

Objective:  Learn sequential counting for 5’s.  Review/learn the mult. process.  
Materials: Sequential counting handout, worksheet, pencil,
Instructional procedures:
• Review sequential counting for 2’s – 4’s.
• Learn sequential counting for 5’s
• Practice 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication
• Mult. Worksheet
• Study parts of computation problems vocabulary terms (addend, factor, …)
• Learn the word:  multiple
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective:  Improve comprehension and writing skills by answering in complete sentences.  
Materials: Frindle reading book, worksheet, pencil  
Instructional procedures:
• Read ch. 8 in Frindle together as a class
• Ch. 8 questions
• Fill out the character packet
• Read AR
Assessment:- questions-worksheet  

LANGUAGE/SPELLING/WRITING:  10:30-11:30  
Title I math:  11:00-11:30   ( except on Tuesday (library)
11:30- restroom break before recess

Objective: Students will take a spelling pretest and will edit daily language sentences.
Materials: spelling pretest unit 2, daily language sentences week 2, spelling words unit 2, paper, pencil
Instructional procedures:
• Give unit 2 spelling pretest to students
• Have students write unit 1 words twice each (printing each word once and writing each word in cursive once).
• Read/discuss/edit daily language sentences for week 2.  Have students state the rule for correcting the error whenever possible.
• Write unit 2 spelling words twice:  print once and once in cursive
 
Assessment: spelling pretest, teacher observation  

NOON RECESS:  11:30-11:45  Get students from recess/Hand out lunch cards/sanitize hands at 11:45

LUNCH:          11:50-12:15  Pick up students in lunchroom at 12:15.

12:20-12:50        BAND
Non-band students will complete all unfinished work and then read AR books.  Study the study sheets if AR goal is met or a test is approaching.

12:50-1:30       Later in the year this period will be Mandarin Chinese class.  Today this will be a study period to complete all work and then read AR.

1:30-2:00 This will be Title Reading time once that class has started.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  
SCIENCE this week:
objective: Describe characteristics of the kingdoms of life.   
materials: textbook
instruction:  
• Read/discuss text pgs. A12-A19.  Complete a graphic organizer sheet over the information read.
assessment: teacher observation

2:20 Restroom break/change into PE shoes, update planners, organize work folders for the end of the day

2:25-3:15 MUSIC/PE
(Walk the class to music.  Pick the students up from PE at 3:15).

3:15 Check work folders and planners to see that all necessary materials are taken home to be studied or completed.   Pack bookbags with necessary materials/planners/work folders/study sheets, lunch notes, etc.

Dismiss students according to daily procedures.

MATH  8:30-9:30

Objective: Learn sequential counting for 5’s/6’s; review 2’s - 4’s.  Multiply and divide.  
Materials: sequential counting packet, pencil, worksheets, study sheet
Instructional procedures:
• Teach the 5’s and 6’s sequential counting to the class.  Have students take out their sequential counting packet.
• Review division and multiplication steps.  Give worksheets.
• Take out the vocabulary parts of computation problems worksheet from the red folder.  Review it.  Students should study it in their free time.
• Review the meaning of the word “multiple.”
• Teach giant inch to ¼’s of an inch
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective: Improve reading comprehension skills by answering questions in complete sentences.
Materials: Frindle book, pencil, worksheet, character packet
Instructional procedures:   
• Read/discuss ch. 9 in Frindle.
• Answer ch. 9 questions in complete sentences.
• Add to character packet.
Assessment: worksheet


LANGUAGE/SPELLING/WRITING:  10:30-11:30

Objective: Edit sentences (conventions).  Learn spelling words.  Brainstorm the pretest writing prompt required for the first 9 weeks.  
Materials:  DL (daily language sentences), spelling packet, writing prompt sheet, pencil
Instructional procedures:  
• Read/discuss/edit daily language sentences for week 2, Tuesday.
• Begin teaching 6-Trait Writing:  IDEAS
• Study spelling words.
Assessment: teacher observation, DL edited sentences

NOON RECESS:  11:30-11:45  Get students from recess/Hand out lunch cards/sanitize hands at 11:45

LUNCH:          11:50-12:15  Pick up students in lunchroom at 12:15.

12:20-12:50        BAND
Non-band students will complete all unfinished work and then read AR books.  Study the study sheets if AR goal is met or a test is approaching.

12:50-1:30       Later in the year this period will be Mandarin Chinese class.  However, today do the “wordle” activity on the laptops.  See the example in the folder.  (Look up “wordle” in the Internet).  Students will write their first names in large letters.  Then they will choose words that describe themselves and tell about their interests, hobbies, and lives.  Print out the finished products.
1:30-2:00 This will be Title Reading time once that class has started.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  
SCIENCE this week:
objective: Interpret illustrations
materials: textbook. pencil
instruction:  
• Do worksheets pages 7 and 9.

Objective:  Learn the parts of an inch to ¼’s of an inch.  Multiply and divide.  Learn sequential counting by 5’s and 6’s.  
Materials:  sequential counting packet and poster, measurement study sheet, worksheets
Instructional procedures:
• Learn the 5’s – 6’s sequential counting.
• Explain and teach the parts of an inch to the nearest ¼’s of an inch.  Hand out a study guide.
• Division and multiplication worksheets
• Review the vocabulary words for parts of computation problems.
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective: Improve reading comprehension skills by listing character traits.  
Materials: character traits packet, Frindle book, pencil, worksheet
Instructional procedures:
• Read/discuss ch. 10 in Frindle.
• Update character packet as new characters are added to the book.
• Worksheet (questions over the chapter)
Assessment:  worksheet, character packet

12:50-1:30       Later in the year this period will be Mandarin Chinese class.  Today have students use computers for Math Facts in a Flash.

1:30-2:20 SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES (alternating weeks).  
SCIENCE this week:
objective: Understand the importance of biodiversity.
materials: textbook
instruction:  
• Read text pgs. A22-A23.  Do pgs. A24-A25 (#1-15).
assessment: pgs. A24-A25

2:20 Restroom break/change into PE shoes, update planners, organize work folders for the end of the day

2:25-3:15 MUSIC/PE
(Walk the class to music.  Pick the students up from PE at 3:15).

• Teach parts of an inch to the nearest ¼ inch
• Discuss reducing fractions
• Mult/div. worksheet
• Vocabulary quiz- computation problem vocabulary

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective: Use context clues to determine meanings.
Materials: context clues guide, Frindle book, ch. 11 questions
Instructional procedures:
• Hand out/discuss context clues study guide.
• Read/discuss ch. 11 in Frindle.
• Do ch. 11 questions.
• Read AR books.

Objective:  Review sequential counting from 2’s – 6’s.  
Materials: sequential counting packet, small white boards/markers
Instructional procedures:
• Give students whiteboards/markers to write the sequential counting for 2’s – 6’s.
• Have students draw a “giant inch” and label parts of an inch to nearest ¼’s of an inch.
• Have students show the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and label the parts of each problem.
• Have students write a multiplication chart.
Assessment:  teacher observation, worksheet

READING:     9:30-10:30
Objective:  Improve reading comprehension skills.
Materials: Frindle quiz, AR books, pencil
Instructional procedures:
• Take a Frindle quiz.
• Read AR books.

• Read samples of students’ writing from past years.
• Give unit 2 spelling test
• Read AR.
