Welcome to Second Grade!

I would like to welcome you to my classroom!!  Second grade is a busy year filled with many new learning experiences.  It is the transitional year between primary and intermediate elementary grades, and that involves a lot of new experiences and expectations for our students.  Here are some things we will be working on this coming year:

  1. MATH:
    1. Memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts using various strategies and “tricks”
    2. Adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers with regrouping
    3. Becoming proficient in counting various amounts of coins and bills and telling time to the minute
    4. Practicing place value through the thousands and skip counting by various increments
    5. Learning to become proficient problem solvers
    6. Using the Smartboard to review and practice skills
  2. READING:

            a.  Reviewing and applying phonics rules to longer words

b  Learning how to read to learn rather than just learning to read

            c.  Practicing reading skills such as cause/effect, problem/solution,                 context clues, sequencing, etc. and how they help us understand                 what we read

           d.  Walk to Read – leveled and more individualized reading                 instruction (more information will be given out at the beginning of                 the school year)

            e.  Nightly reading homework to help build fluency and                          comprehension

            f.  Taking Accelerated Reader tests on the books that are read to                 check comprehension and prepare for third grade

3.  SCIENCE:

            a.  Learning about life cycles, including butterflies, chickens, frogs,                 plants and other living things.

            b.  Studying weather, the atmosphere, and the solar system

            c.  Exploring energy and how it is made and used

            d.  Learning about the scientific process and using it to conduct                 experiments.

            e.  Using Interdistance Learning (IDLs) to explore more science                 concepts

4.  SOCIAL STUDIES:

    1. Understanding our community and our responsibilities as a citizen
    2. Learning the difference between needs and wants
    3. Studying how our government works
    4. Identifying the symbols of Kansas and how history is important to us

5.  COMPUTERS:

    1. Frequent use of the Computers on Wheels (COW) which is our laptops within our classroom
    2. Exploring different websites and computer programs to build math, reading and writing skills
    3. Using Study Island to practice math and reading skills
    4. Practicing math facts using Math Facts in a Flash
  1. As you can see, we will be busy.  These are only a few of the things we will be exploring and learning next year.  Students will have PE/Music daily.  They will be expected to have all homework completed each day, including nightly reading homework.  In second grade, we work really hard on responsibility for our actions and take our job as students very seriously.

I’m so excited to meet my new students in the fall.  We are going to have a fun and exciting school year!!

                                                                       Mrs. Mortensen
