Lesson Plans: Mrs. Otte’s 5th grade class
2009-2010
Date: MONDAY, Dec. 7
8:10 Bell rings. Students enter the building. Hand in homework/copy assignments into planners/turn in lunch money/hand in returned notes/sharpen pencils/organize materials, etc.
8:20 Take attendance and lunch count.
MATH 8:30-9:20
New concept: Estimation in word problems
Objective: Students will estimate answers to word problems.
Materials: paper, pencils, worksheets, study guides
Instructional procedures:
• Review rounding steps with the class.
• Do an estimation word problem sheet together.
• Do a rounding sheet
• Mean, median, mode sh.
Assessment: teacher observation, worksheets
READING: 9:25-10:30
Objective: Identify the author’s purpose.
Materials: pencil, worksheet, AR book, study guides
Instructional procedures:
• Hand out a study sheet on author’s purpose. Read/discuss. Have students put it in their 3-ring binders at the front of the reading tab when finished.
• Do “Bike Tour Safety” sheet. Highlight answers. Write key words in margins. Write question numbers beside highlighted answers.
• Read AR books when finished.
Assessment: teacher observation, worksheet
LANGUAGE/SPELLING/WRITING: 10:30-11:30
Title I math: 11:00-11:30 ( except on Tuesday (library)
Objective: Students will copy and write spelling words: printing and writing in cursive. Students will edit daily language sentences. Students will take a spelling pretest. Students will start brainstorming the 6-Trait Writing paper for the 2nd 9 weeks required writing assignment.
Materials: spelling units packet, daily language packet, pencil, spelling pretest packet, paper, pencil, 6-Trait Writing study guides
Instructional procedures:
• Give spelling pretest over unit 15 words. Students have the spelling words and the spelling pretest packets in their 3-ring binders.
• Read/ discuss unit 15 spelling words with the class. Have students write each word twice (printing them once and writing in cursive once).
• Read/discuss/edit/write daily language sentences for week 15, Monday’s sentences. Students have the DL packet in their 3-ring binders.
• Hand out the writing topics for the end of the 2nd 9 weeks 6-Trait Writing assignment. Have students choose the topic and begin brainstorming and making a plan.
• Read AR when finished.
Assessment: spelling pretest, daily language written sentences, writing pretest, AR books
11:30- restroom break before recess
NOON RECESS: 11:30-11:45
LUNCH: 11:50-12:15 Pick up students in lunchroom at 12:15.
12:20-12:50 BAND DAILY (Non-band students will read AR/finish work/study).
12:50-1:15 Read AR daily.
(On Mondays take a restroom break at 1:15 before computer lab and
change into PE shoes). Update planners/check off completed work.

3:25 Prepare to leave. Pack bookbags with necessary materials/planners/work folders/study sheets in binders, lunch notes, etc.

• Read/edit/write Daily Language sentences for week 15, Wednesday, together in class. Locate the error, discuss the rule for it, and then correctly write the two sentences.
• Work on the rough draft of the 6-Trait Writing topic.

• Due to the IDL during reading class, study Blue Rabbit and Bike Tour Safety during language class.

instructional procedures:
• Have students get a laptop computer. First, they will do Math Facts in a Flash for 10 minutes. Then they will do Study Island: symmetry and real world problems. Do the lesson first and then test mode sets of 10 questions each.

READING 9:30-10:30
objective: Students will identify author’s purpose.

instructional procedures:
• Get into Study Island on laptop computers: prefixes/suffixes, fact/opinion, and cause/effect. Read the lessons first. Then do 10 test mode questions of each section.

objective: Students will learn spelling words. Students will write simple, compound, and complex sentences. Students will edit daily language sentences.
materials: unit spelling words in spelling packet; Daily Language sentences packet , Six-Trait Writing packet

• Together in class read/discuss/edit/write daily language sentences in the packet in students’ 3-ring binders for week 15, Thursday. Have students identify (orally) the errors and state the rules for correcting the errors.
• Finish rough draft on 6-Trait Writing paper.
