Fourth Grade Information

September 26, 2009
Welcome to fourth grade! I am very excited about working with you and your child this year. Below is information regarding policies and routines that will take place in the classroom. If you have any questions regarding these, please call or come by.
PLANNERS:
I believe that maintaining open communication between teachers and parents is an important part of educating our students. Students will be receiving a planner. These planners are to be filled out daily. When the student completes an assignment, they need to check it off. We will also review the daily assignment at the end of the day to help your child remember. Your child will be bringing their planner home everyday. I will also be using the planners to send home notes. Once you have checked the planner please sign it. Students who return their planners filled out and signed will receive a sticker for that day. Every month students will receive incentives if they bring their planners filled out and signed daily.
HOMEWORK FOLDERS:
One of the folders on the supply list will become the homework folder. This folder will be coming home daily with completed and uncompleted work. Students will label one side “TAKE HOME” and the other “BRING BACK”. The materials that are in the take home side are graded materials that can remain at home. The materials on the "bring back" side will include homework items or any unfinished assignments. This homework folder needs to be in class daily. Please help your child with this. If there are any questions regarding an item please ask.
MISSING WORK:
If an assignment is not turned in the morning it is due it will be recognized as late. Students are given the opportunity to complete the assignment within a two-week period for 10% off the assignment grade. An example might be a child who receives 80% on an assignment turned the paper in late so the child will receive 70%. I will only accept late work within a two week time period. It will then become a zero.
If your child is absent, they may complete the work for full credit. They will be given extra time to complete the assignment.
CORRECTIONS:
In order for us to learn from our mistakes we must correct them. Students are given the opportunity to correct any assignment for ½ credit. This means that if a student misses 5 problems and then chose to correct it (NO ERRORS) they will receive a grade for only missing 2 ½. Students who receive 70% or lower on an assignment must correct the paper for a better grade. This may be done at recess or at home.
GRADES:
Our district provides access to grades on-line. You can access your child’s grade to monitor progress throughout the year. The website is www.heringtonschools.org. I will also be sending progress reports home that must be signed and returned. The progress reports will also keep you informed on their AR goals.
BEHAVIOR POLICY:
In order to maintain a positive learning environment for all students, the fourth grade will follow behavior and discipline policies and we will be implementing life skills using Railer Code of Conduct. Students will be taught a life skill in the classroom and they will be required to model that skill. Information will be sent home regarding the skill being taught to students to help with implementation at home. A list of these skills can be found on page 17-18 in the student handbook.
If a student breaks a rule they will be given a warning. If the behavior continues the student will be given a consequence such as the loss of recess. If the student continues the negative behavior the student will be removed from the classroom and will be asked to go to the office and a phone call to parents will be made. However, there are some circumstances in which the student will be sent directly to the office based on the behavior. An example of this might be threatening another student, harming others, or exhibiting violent behavior. If you have any questions please call.
HOMEWORK:
Please feel free to call me if your child is having trouble at home on a homework assignment. I will do my best to help over the phone or arrange time the next morning to meet with them. All that I ask is that you call before 8:00pm. I have two children of my own and I like to get to bed early! My number is 258-3805. You can also leave a message using my voicemail at school by using extension #226. I will return your phone call as soon as possible. If you feel more comfortable using email, you may email me at mchristn@usd487.org .
