K -1st Flexible 20-25 minutes of story time and instruction and 20 minutes for check out and recreational reading.
Learn care of books, recall, characters, storyline, setting

Focus on checking out, library protocol, vocabulary, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and comprehension, and reading for pleasure
2nd 20 minutes – check out and 25 min. instruction or story time

Focus -Tall Tales, alphabetical order, Caldecott, Biographies
3rd-5th 20 minute slot weekly for check out and recreational reading. These students can come and go freely the rest of the week. They can read magazines or browse the new Destiny Quest online.

3rd 30 minutes of instruction: Graphic Organizers, same/different, recognizing 5w’s (who, what, where, when, why or how). They begin to take basic notes on fiction stories.
Focus - Dictionary skills, alphabetical order, context, using the computer card catalog, Fiction main idea.
4th 30 minutes of instruction: Gathering information for reports, Main Idea for Non-fiction, Plagarism
Focus -Using the computer card catalog to find references and recreational reading, Paragraph writing, Idioms , Introduced to non-fiction fact note taking
