Derek Knopp receives SOTM honor for September

Junior Derek Knopp has been chosen by teachers September student of the month. Derek is the son of Mark and DeAn Knopp.

He thinks the reason he was chosen for student of the month is because he works hard in his classes and tries to help others at any chance he gets.

"I think Derek is a good kid. He does what he is supposed to do, and he is respectful of his peers and teachers," said Mr. Nick Fuemmeler, weightlifting teacher.

Derek participates in National Honor Society, Student Council, Jazz Band, Drama Club and Vocal.

NHS is his favorite activity because the other people in NHS are fun to be around, and he enjoys the activities that they do, he said.

In addition to organizations, Derek participates in cross country, basketball and track during the year.

The most useful thing that he has learned is that even if you fail once, twice, or however many times you do, you can never take your eyes off the goal and must continue trying until you finally succeed.

"I think it is obvious that he works hard to be a good student and person," said Mrs. Deb Geissert, Junior English teacher.

Derek's favorite class is history because he likes any kind of history.

After high school Derek wants to play basketball at college, and then live in Europe so he can translate French and Italian as a career.

Other people nominated for student of the month were Seniors Tyler Barber, Sarah Demadura, Katie Lyons, Hannah Nistler, Brooklyn Osburn and Morgan Rigg; Juniors Josh Connors, Chandler Erickson, Taylor Kickhaefer and Kaitlin Patterson; Sophomores Dylan Geissert and Cara Meyer; and Freshmen Brianna Blackwell, Alyssa Lindler and Colgan Powell.

Student of the month is sponsored by National Honor Society, but nominees do not have to be members of the organization to receive the honor. Students are nominated by teachers, and then nominees are voted on by all staff members.
