Herington High School has many science classes
to offer. Among them are Mrs. Kim Coover’s Anatomy and Physiology,
Comparative Anatomy and biology classes. These classes are made for
major dissections.
In Anatomy and Physiology
and Biology, the students learn the basic organization and workings
of a human by using animals that are close to humans in design. For
Comparative Anatomy, the students learn how each phylum of animals
varies from each other and trace the evolutionary development of
animals from the simple to the complex.
In Anatomy and Physiology students dissect a
cat, a cow heart, a sheep brain, and a cow eye. Students will begin
dissecting in November and will continue until the end of the year.
Biology students dissect pigs for two weeks at the end of the year.
In Comparative Anatomy class students dissect a mussel, an
earthworm, a grasshopper, a squid, a starfish, a perch, a frog, a
rat, a crayfish and a shark.
Dissections are enjoyable both for Mrs. Coover
and the students.
“It’s hands on, which makes the learning
experience more enjoyable,” Mrs. Coover said.
