Herington hosted the Flint Hills League Art Festival during the
afternoon of April 7.
Art students from throughout the league attended the festival and
displayed art work for critique. There were an estimated 400 pieces
entered into the festival.
The criteria for judging the works were technical merit, creativity
and workmanship.
Senior Kaleigh Schneider won first place in ceramic sculpture and
third place in mixed media.
Other participants in the event were senior Alex Carroll;
sophomores Sarah Demadura, Katie Lyons and Brooklyn Osburn; and
freshmen Taylor Kickhaefer, and Ashley Hartman.
The judges for the event were Ashton Ludden, a senior at Emporia
State University, and Tonya Lewis, a local artist and gallery
owner.
In addition to the judging there were workshops set up in various
classrooms. There was the toilet paper wedding dress competition
that was held in the cafeteria and in Mrs. Kim Coover’s room. There
also was a chalk art workshop behind the middle school with “eyes”
as the subject matter.
“Our toilet paper wedding dress competition was the hit of the
festival,” said Mrs. Cathy Crouch, art instructor.
A mixture of Art Club members, art students and other students set
up the event and helped take it down.
The helpers were Chris Stroda, Josh Mell, Jacob Legleiter, Nikko
Resto and Taylor Svitak.
Sponsorship of the art festival is rotated between league
schools.
