Track season is underway at Herington High School, with Coach
Phil Berndt leading the team.
Practices started on March 10, which is a little later than some
schools, but Coach Berndt thinks that this helps the athletes to
obtain their peak performance at league and regional
competition.
Twenty-four students have gone out for track this year. There are
17 boys: three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and six
freshmen. There are also seven girls: three juniors and four
freshmen.
Coach Berndt wants for each individual “to compete to the best of
their abilities and improve at each meet they go to.”
He is excited that there are so many boys competing this year, and
he knows that they can be very competitive in the running and
jumping events. He also thinks that the girls’ team, while young,
can improve considerably during the season.
The first track meet of the season is on April 2 at Inman. This
will be the first of 10 meets scheduled for this season. Different
members of the track team will compete at different meets,
depending on the competition found there.
