Up a creek without a paddle is how some General Science students
felt when they launched their boats at the Herington Municipal
Swimming Pool on August 30.
Under the supervision of Mrs. Denise Wood, the students
constructed a boat to take to the pool to race.
The only other material they were allowed to use with the
cardboard was a standard roll of duct tape. The purpose of the
activity was to teach the students about buoyancy. Each group had
about a week to build their boat.
"The boats were critiqued mainly on creativity and whether or
not they could keep their boat floating," said Mrs. Wood.
Overall the result of the races turned out successfully.
Although 90 percent of the boats ended up flipping over, the
students had fun with the activity.
Also participating in the event were physics students and other
science classes from Centre High School
