Congratulations to the '07-'08 HHS Dance Team
story image 1

by Julie Noeth
August 07, 2007

The Herington High School Dance Team attended a Universal Dance
Association Camp at Butler County Community College from July 24th-July
27th. They earned a trophy for overall superior ratings on their
evaluations! They learned and were evaluated on routines in several
styles of dance including hip hop, pom, kick, and jazz. The dances were
different levels from level I to level IV. Level I was the least complex
and level IV dances were the most difficult. For each evaluation, the
dancers could receive a blue, red, or a white ribbon. The blue ribbon
was the highest and was worth 3 points for the team, a red was worth 2
points, and a white was worth 1 point. At the end of camp, each team’s
points were added and divided by the number of dancers on the team.
Teams with a high enough average received a superior trophy for their
evaluations. They also preformed and were evaluated on their home
routine. They were awarded a red ribbon for their home routine.

In addition, the dancers got ribbons for “drill downs.” Drill down was
an exercise the dancers did at the end of each day. A UDA instructor
called out a series of commands the dancers had learned and the dancers
had to perform the command without making a mistake. Those that made a
mistake had to sit down and were “out.” The final few dancers that
remained standing were given ribbons.

Some girls received “special recognition” ribbons for extra effort
during their time at camp. Morgan Rigg and Maddy Morgan received special
recognition for practicing routines throughout their break time on
Wednesday. Jessica Perry, Missy Traskowsky, Morgan Rigg, and Cisti
Schlesener got special recognition for their excellent teamwork in
preparing for their team routine on Thursday.

The following are the awards each dancers received:
