August 2007
Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
As we begin the new school year, I would like to request your support and participation in helping your student to be successful in his/her mathematics course this year. We will cover at least one lesson each class period, and a problem set will be assigned for homework. Each student will be required to write the day’s assignment in his/her student planner. Each student will need a 3-ring binder for his/her mathematics portfolio which will be graded at the end of each nine week period. Within this 3-ring binder, students are asked to keep their daily notes, assignments, and journal entries. Students are also required to have a book cover to protect our textbooks. Quizzes will be given periodically over the material we have covered in class. A test will be given at the end of each unit of study. Each student will need a calculator that is capable of doing fractions. Please make sure your child is equipped with such a calculator.
You can help us in your child’s mathematics education by doing the following:
1.) Make sure your student has a quiet place to do his/her homework, away from any distractions.
2.) Ask your student to check to see that the daily assignment is completed
and neatly organized. Late work is accepted for half credit until the
day of the test covering that material.
Assignments are posted for the week on my website at http://heringtonschools.org/vnews/display.v/ART/2007/01/23/438241caf2e6f
3.) Help your student if he/she needs it. If you can’t help with explanations, encourage your student to reread the pertinent section. Encourage your student to put forth his/her best effort. On-line tutoring is available at www.homeworkkansas.org .
4.) Ask your student if he/she is using his/her seminar time to seek help with their mathematics homework.
5.) If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school 258-2261 between the hours of 8 A.M. and 4 P.M. or after school hours at 785-466-6365.
If students, teachers, and parents work together closely for better education, the possibilities and the results will be marvelous. I look forward to working with you to give your student the best education we can offer.
Sincerely,
Darlene Griffiths
Mathematics Instructor
