Free College Classes
FREE college classes? Yes it is true! In January 2012, Governor Brownback announced a bold and innovative plan to enhance career technical education in Kansas and better prepare high school students for college and careers. The legislatures responded with Senate Bill 155 which provides new state dollars to pay college tuition for high school students earning college credits in technical courses and at the same time, earn an industry credential valued by employers. The free college tuition applies to any and all technical courses in approved programs at public community and technical colleges.Herington High School has partnered with Cloud County Community College to offer these types of classes. We also have the ability to offer Butler County Coummunity College Classes as well. Most of the classes are online, some use the Interactive Distance Learning lab with in our school and few are in person. The Welding Program that our high school students took part in last year is one of these types of classes. Another example is the CNA class offered in our school this Fall.Tuition is covered under the SB155, however students have the costs of textbooks, fees, and test costs (if any). This is a great opportunity for students to receive college credit as well as high school credits for the classes.
It important to pay attention to the types of classes offered under the free tuition. You will not see Comp I or Comp II, College Algebra, or even College Speech classes fall under the SB155. Only technical courses in approved programs at public community and technical colleges are covered.
There will be a list of courses here as soon as we receive it. For more information check back as time nears school start date.
